The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 came into force on 20 March 2011. These regulations mean that all business owners must ensure that all fuel and oil storage tanks on their premises are bunded by December 2015. Those who don’t comply with the regulations may face a fine of up to £20,000. These regulations are enforced by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency to: Promote better oil storage Protect the environment against contamination from oil and fuel tanks Minimise the risk of oil loss and spillageHow do I comply?
All oil storage tanks affected should be provided with a secondary containment system, commonly known as a ‘BUND’ or a tank within a tank. An integrally bunded tank consists of a primary tank, which contains the oil or fuel.
